Dave Liebman Quartet

Saxophonist Dave Liebman's latest band is one of his strongest yet. Witness the diversity of style on two recent CDs: Conversation is a looser session ranging from funk to free blowing to Indian-inflected modality. On In a Mellow Tone, Liebman's Trane-inspired soprano combined with Vic Juris' textured guitar almost turns the execrable "My Heart Will Go On" into a viable jazz standard.

Fri., April 28, 5 p.m., free with regular museum admission of $8-$12, Philadelphia Museum of Art, 26th St. and the Parkway, 215-763-8100, www.philamuseum.org.

jazz

Fareed Barron Trio

For the longest time it seemed that when Sun Ra left the planet in 1993, he took his piano bench with him, leaving his former bandmates to travel the spaceways minus a keyboardist. That all ended a decade into Marshall Allen's term at the helm, when young Philly pianist Fareed Barron stepped in to help the Arkestra ring in 2006 at the Ethical Society. Barron brings his own, decidedly more earthbound, trio into his predecessor's old terrestrial stomping ground in Germantown.

Fri., April 28, 8 and 10 p.m., $10, LaRose Jazz Club, 5531 Germantown Ave., 215-248-4415.

blues

Saffire the Uppity Blues Women

They're uppity, alright, but in the best possible way. And when Ann Rabson, Gaye Adegbalola and Andra Faye hit the stage, musical sparks fly. Tearing into both covers and originals with equal measures of passion, wit and creativity, the trio dishes out hearty helpings of post-feminist traditional blues with their trademark abandon.

Sat., April 29, 7 and 9:30 p.m., $22, with Carol Moog, Tin Angel, 20 S. Second St., 215-928-0770, www.tinangel.com.

rock/pop

Victoria Williams

The crackling trill of her voice ain't everyone's cup of tea, but Victoria Williams is an American original: as sincere a singer-songwriter as has ever walked this earth—and one whose finely detailed songs have earned legions of fans among the other (more famous) people who have recorded them. From her idiosyncratic originals to her quirky takes on classic numbers (like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"), Williams proudly marches to her own drum.

Fri., April 28, 7:30 p.m., $15, Tin Angel, 20 S. Second St., 215-928-0770, www.tinangel.com.

bluegrass festival

Burlington County Bluegrass

Free bluegrass in sweet weather, pavement for lawn chairs, grass for picnics, plenty of shade—for all these things, Burlington County College merits our gratitude. And what a lineup: Lou Reid's superb lead singing is legendary and Jeanette Williams, heading up her own band, ain't too shabby either. A pair of songwriting champs from MerleFest, Maring and Bowlin are also on the bill along with Mark Miklos and the Raritan Valley Ramblers. As this is the college's community day, there are activities to interest all ages, so bring a carload out to Pemberton, rain or shine.

Sun., April 30, noon-4 p.m., free, Burlington County College, Rt. 530, Pemberton, N.J., 609-894-8900, www.Z889.com.

classical

Duo con Forza

They're spunky, and not just a little funky. The hotshot guitar team Duo con Forza are classically trained, but echo the rebellious heritage of their instrument. For their second appearance with Chamber Music Now! they will premiere music by Philly composers Jan Krzywicki and Jay Reise, but there just might be some Led Zeppelin, too.

Sat., April 29, 8 p.m., $15 ($10 students and seniors), Philadelphia Ethical Society, 1906 S. Rittenhouse Sq., 215-605-9988, www.chambermusicnow.org.
