THE WEEK IN EATS
Cheese It!
Thu., May 18, 6:30-8:30 p.m., $40
You might think that a house made entirely of cheese would be structurally unsound, but the DiBruno brothers have managed to keep their House of Cheese standing for more than 65 years. Join them May 18, as they display their knowledge of Philly's taste buds by offering imported and domestic cheeses with their natural complements: beer and chocolate. The sweets will be prepared by chocolatiers Ellen Byrne and Christopher Carlson of Portsmouth, N.H. Here's hoping the chocolatiers come come with orange-faced men singing cautionary songs.
DiBruno's/Slow Foods: Chocolate and Cheese, Upstairs at DiBruno's , 1730 Chestnut St., 215-665-9220.
Give Mom a Break
Sun., May 14, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., $30
Your mother asks so little of youa clean room, a call if you're going to be late, not to get drunk at family gatherings and urinate in the front yard. Isn't it time to cut her some slack? If you're too old to get away with giving her a bouquet of flowers made from recycled egg cartons, why not take her out for the best meal of the week: brunch. One-up your siblings by treating Mom to a three-courser featuring the exotic cuisine of Hawaiian-fusion chef Roy Yamaguchi. He'll be offering seafood specialties like his crispy crab and lobster rangoons and crab cakes Benedict, as well as Hawaiian-style Loco Mocco (aka Yamma's Mamma Meatloaf) and, for dessert, a choice of chocolate and macadamia nut crunch bar or lemongrass and orange flan.
Roy's Mother's Day Brunch,
Roy's Restaurant, 124 S. 15th St., 215-988-1814.
If the Dock's a Rockin'
Thu., May 11, 5-8 p.m., free
The Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant is notorious for breaking all the rules of happy hour. For starters, they're dragging it on for three hours. And instead of tossing some mysteriously hairy chicken wings under a red light and claiming to have free food, they're providing a real buffet and hors d'oeuvres. At the very least, you'd think they'd have the decency to hold it in the dreary atmosphere of a dank dive on a sunny afternoon. Nope. This event will be held on the largest outdoor party deck in the region and will feature $4 Heinekens, frozen drinks and live music from venue regulars Dave and the Naturals.
Rock the Dock, Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant, 4120 Main St., 215-482-8220.
Día de la Madre Feliz
Sun., May 14, noon-8 p.m., $30
In many ways, Creole's cultural blend of French, Spanish, Caribbean and African-American styling is an edible metaphor for America. In honor of our country's multicultural moms, Carmine's Creole Cafe is offering a special four-course meal. Chef/owner John Mims is serving butternut squash bisque with truffle essence and a main course of roasted chili and sea bass topped with lobster champagne butter sauce and served over grilled spinach.
Mother's Day Four-Course Tasting, Carmine's Creole Cafe, 232 Woodbine Ave., Narberth, 610-660-0160.
