Arts Agenda : Last Chance

Last Chance

Catch It or Regret It

The Graphic Imperative: International Posters for Peace, Social Justice and the Environment, 1965-2005

Runs through May 23, Design Center at Philadelphia University/Goldie Paley House, 4200 Henry Ave., 215-951-2860

In a French anti-war poster titled Peace (1989), the planet Earth projectile-vomits military weapons, thus purging the world of its killing machines. The Guerilla Girls' Do Women Have to Be Naked to Get Into the Met Museum? (1989) calls attention to the lack of artwork by females in major museums and galleries by depicting the backside of a nude woman wearing an angry gorilla head. The exhibition's purpose is simple: To stimulate its viewers, spurring them to act on the pressing issues of the day.

Art in Motion: Siegfried Schreiber

Runs through May 20, Wood Turning Center, 501 Vine St., 215-923-8000, www.woodturningcenter.org

In his U.S. debut, the German woodworker makes sweet romance out of wood. In his piece The Lovers or Liebespaar, two wooden cups with rounded bottoms waltz and mingle when placed upon a smooth, wooden plate called the Japanese vessel. When they eventually stop twirling, they meet together and touch. The cups would spoon, if cups could spoon. Aww.

Devils Also Believe

Runs through May 20, $15, Shubin Theatre, 407 Bainbridge St., 215-592-0119, www.ticketleap.com

Kindergarten taught us that the U.S. of A. is a place where freedom and independence flourish. Well, children, that's all a big fat American lie told by big fat American liars. The play Devils Also Believe presents a family grappling with its identity and beliefs post-9/11, while exploring the omnipresent and often detrimental "values" that permeate this country.
