One thing you can count on when it comes to a Pilobolus show is that even if you think you're hip to their shtick—they're well known for visual trickery as well as combining human bodies in provocative formations—it's impossible to anticipate their next move. Even Randy Swartz, who commissioned the company to create a world premiere for his Dance Celebration series, isn't entirely certain what's in store when the Pils, as they are affectionately known, present Prism at the Annenberg Center this week. One thing is for sure: "The piece will play into the series' season-long theme of rock 'n' roll," Swartz says. "They'll be exploring rock in the contemporary world."

The title, according to Swartz, "refers to how light is refracted, and here it relates to different ways of looking at things ... the idea of the work, much like a lot of what Pilobolus does, is to look at how the individual and the group react with each other."

Prism is performed by three men and one woman, a configuration that Swartz says is designed to "set up an imbalance, a tension. And it will call upon the more philosophical side of Pilobolus. They can be playful, sensual, serious, joyous, whatever, but it's usually about relationships. Very rarely do you see a solo—it's always about how people interact."

Also on the program are the entrancing Aquatica, where performers move as if underwater while their bodies combine in wondrous ways, and a duet featuring a UArts grad, the fabulous Renee Jaworski.
