Ever toeing the line between mad genius and irritating schizophrenic, Guillermo Scott Herren is a man slaving away at his craft. The indie hip-hop producer's fragmented stutter has none of the cool, effortless sheen of today's million-dollar beats: This is gears-turning, percussion-clattering and video-game-sound-effects-colliding, and he makes no attempt to hide the significant assembly required. And yet, from such a garbage disposal approach, the most beguiling beat will emerge, linger seductively and then be violently jerked away by a man eager to serve you his next 30-second course. Call it melodic speed dating of the illest variety. He owes a debt to DJ Shadow, as do nearly all cut-chemists of his kind, but what perhaps makes Herren unique is the apparent sweat that makes the wheels turn. Expect snippets of brilliance; expect whiplash.
