The Stinky Cheese Man
The Stinky Cheese Man

The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales

Runs through June 11, Arden Theatre, 40 N. Second St., 215-922-1122

Lowbrow humor, fast-paced storylines and what might be a Limburger cheese costume make up the recipe for entertaining a 5-year-old. But this subversive take on classic fairy tales is closer to reality than the traditional stories: An ugly duckling grows up to be a homely adult duck instead of a swan; the princess kisses the frog and the frog remains a slimy, warty amphibian. Sorry, kids, real life sucks.

The Early Modern Painter-Etcher

Runs through June 11, Arthur Ross Gallery, University of Pennsylvania, 220 S. 34th St., 215-898-4401

We've all practiced the "art" of etching: Telephone poles, picnic tables and the backs of bus seats everywhere bear our collective initials. Even professional painters have dabbled in etching; catch the rare carvings of Rembrandt, Durer, Goya, Caravaggio and other artists from the 16th to 18th centuries in this exhibit. A few of the showcased painters only etched a single print and later abandoned the medium.

Yeomen of the Guard

Runs through June 10, Longwood Gardens, U.S. Route 1, Kennett Sq., 610-388-1000

Never trust your relatives. They're just after what's in your bank account. Colonel Fairfax is incarcerated after being charged with sorcery. If he bites it unwed, a relative will inherit his fortune. Two characters secretly set out to get him hitched. Expect lots of comedy, romance, suspense and duplicity. Picture Mr. Burns' sinister "Eehhxcellent" gesture, finger twiddling and fiendish plotting.
