Last ChanceCatch It or Regret It
More and more contemporary artists are drawing inspiration from world conflict, particularly the war in Iraq. Battle imagery evokes dark fears and disturbing emotions, and may exhume buried memories for those once involved in the brutality. In this multimedia presentation, poetry, war letters, political speeches and moving graphics are blended with different styles of music to produce a narrative that examines the brutal aftermath of war.
James Atkins' small but well-traveled collection of oil paintings represents scenes from Poland, Cuba, South Africa, China, Peru, Italy and many other regions across the world. In a Belgium portrait titled Last View, a red rose pops out among gray, crowded tombstones; Portugal's Night Dance is an aerial view of ballroom dancers in black and white, with hints of soft purple, brown and yellow; and Rome's Cemetery Walk completes the graveyard motif as a lonely woman walks toward a burial plot.

The years were 1974 to 1983, so as you might imagine, T-shirts were as tight as can be, shorts were quite short, glasses were buggy, hair was flowing everywhere and gay people congregated on Christopher Street in New York to announce that they were just like everyone else. Hank O'Neal captures these proud, humorous moments during a controversial time when both were much needed for the gay community. Each photo is accompanied by a chicken-scratch handwritten caption by Allen Ginsberg.
