One Track Mind

Beyoncé "Deja Vu"

You have to love Beyoncé's moxie. Sure, she could play it safe and go the rent-a-diva route, relegating herself to the second-banana role on every thug-lifer's attempt at a ballad. Instead, she's given herself top billing on her ferocious return to the world of summer bangers—her semi-retired boo merely gets a "featuring" credit—and she takes that billing to the hilt, turning in a performance that even out-dazzles Jay's Juan Pierre name-drop (!) in the song's first line (!!!). It all comes right at the song's bridge, when she's trying to whip herself into a chorus-bridging frenzy—she gets a little behind the Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis-esque pulse while paying tribute to her lover's unforgettable sexiness, sending the whole song off-kilter. (Who knew that mimicking iPod jockeys who can't beatmatch properly would result in something so sublime?)

You can probably hear "Deja Vu" once an hour on Q102.
