Music : Picks

Camera Obscura

rock/pop

The term "twee" ought to be stricken from the Mad Libs lexicon of music criticism. Just because a band's Scottish and sometimes drafts Belle & Sebastian members for its production or percussion does not mean it's deserving of a word that screams fluffy bunnies, fat kids in cardigan sweaters and "Seymour Stein." Especially considering the Saturday matinee scope of Camera Obscura's new LP, Let's Get Out of This Country (Merge). Held together quite tightly by the gorgeous singing and elegant songwriting of Tracyanne Campbell, it's tender, yes, and features more than a few songs about love, sure, but at least you'll never feel like an emo boy hiding under an indie hoodie while listening. That's because Campbell approaches her heartbreak with a shrug and an "oh, well, I'll shag again" attitude that's as empowering as it is emotive, while a Great Wall of Sound piles on organs, spacious drums and accordions axed from Lady and the Tramp. Hey Tracy, give me a call if that "False Contender" of yours doesn't work out.

Sat., July 8, 9 p.m., $12, with Georgia James and Bottom of the Hudson, North Star Bar, 27th and Poplar sts., 215-701-1121, www.northstarbar.com.
