Jackie Hoving's paintings are devils in disguise. Behind the flowery motif in Battle of the Birds, two flat birds peck at each other in a bloody shower. In Ground Cover, soldiers crouch with machine guns behind a swim trunks design. And Candy Depew's most impressive pieces are her gold-painted china skulls and cast vitreous china skateboards.
Emotions come out to play in Andrew Wyeth's bucolic drawings and tempera and watercolor paintings. Whether it's a feeling of nostalgia, comfort, loneliness or sadness, Wyeth is an expert at setting the mood with his simple renderings. This particular retrospective captures the subtlety and beauty of American rural life. In the famous Groundhog Day, the sun's rays create a sense of movement and warmth in an empty kitchenas though someone is there, but we can't see who.
A bed of bright white coffee filters floats amid a collection of vibrant paintings. Deep blues, reds, greens and purples dominate this exhibit, and the filters scattered in the middle of the floor unify each multipaneled piece. Tan's acrylic bamboo shoots are an amalgamation of iridescent colors, and the lotus leaves resemble a crowd of bursting fireworks. It's possible to leave this exhibit feeling completely content with the world.
