Remembering Mpozi

Saying goodbye to a friend

In the fray of July 4, trying to put out our July 6 issue, we received unsettling news. Mpozi Mshale Tolbert, a brilliant photographer for The Indianapolis Star, had died suddenly. As a teenager in 1991, Mpozi got his start in these pages. He chronicled The Roots when they were still called The Square Roots; he had a knack for getting into the hearts of his subjects. His loss at the age of 34 is all the more shocking because a cause of death has yet to be determined.

Since we posted news of Mpozi's passing on our staff blog last week, comments from colleagues and friends have poured in as the sad news spread. We present here a sampling of those sentiments (available in full at citypaper.net/clog), a few of his archived shots, a City Paper cover he graced, and an outtake from his 1997 photo shoot with Dominic Episcopo for our then-sister publication Earshot.

He had more courage and energy than anyone I've ever worked with.

I'll remember always how it felt to be greeted by that smile and to be hugged hello by Mpozi.

The last time I saw you was [at] the National Association of Black Journalists convention, and you won an award. I wondered what you'd say, as you accepted this kudo from the establishment. You did your gentle walk up to the podium, leaned toward the microphone and just said, "Free Mumia." In the darkened theater, I just busted out laughing. Only Mpozi. Oh, how I loved you.

Whenever he'd turn in a photo at CP he'd draw these little doodles above his signature ... a squirrelly caricature of himself with the dreads and the giant wide eyes. He was always wide-eyed for a story.

Last week, out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw him sitting at La Colombe. I found out this morning from a good friend that he was already gone. Now I am sure that this city I just returned to after six years is a stranger.

You immortalized everything and everybody. I just can't believe that you're gone.

A memorial service is scheduled for Mpozi on Sat., July 15, 11 a.m., at International House, 3701 Chestnut St., 215-387-5125. A celebration of his life is being planned for July 18.
