Arts Agenda : Last Chance

Last Chance

Catch It or Regret It

Gridlock

Runs through July 29, Gallery Joe, 302 Arch St., 215-592-7752

In this show of grid drawings by 14 artists, beauty is woven through intricate structures. Not all of the grids are hard and defined; some are loose and scattered, challenging the notion of space and precision. In contrast, M. Ho's creepy newspaper collages of skulls and flowers show the aesthetic necessity of alignment. While not all of the pieces follow a strict order, symmetry or arrangement, those that do will be greatly appreciated by left-brain visitors.

Minty

Runs through July 30, Vox Populi, 1315 Cherry St., fourth floor, 215-568-5513

This mixed-bag newbie exhibit smacks of Whitney fare. In Imaginary Lines, a short video piece by Anita Allyn, brightly animated characters, some highly distressed, drive along an open road as country music plays in the background. Micah Danges' must-see holograms-in-a-box capture the humor of the artist; in Caught in the Zone (Snacks with Wings), a bearded man runs through a forest where a slice of pizza, a Coke can and a hot dog float midair.

Message in a Bottle

Runs through Aug. 1, The Gallery at Minnow, 700 S. Sixth St., gallery@catchaminnow.com

Loneliness, entrapment, loss and alcoholism are key themes in this exhibit. Each artist created a vision of what their message in a bottle would reveal. In Emily Glaubinger's pen and ink drawing, an octopus is stuffed into a bottle as its head and tentacles are escaping. A message reads, "She never did quite fit in." Mike Stein's piece features a 7-ounce bottle of Miller High Life filled with alcohol and painted with a happy face. Another small beer bottle sits beside it, empty and frowning.
