Arts Agenda : Last Chance

Last Chance

Catch It or Regret It

Long Gone Sally

Six Six Six
Runs through Aug. 4, Off the Wall Gallery at Dirty Frank's, 347 S. 13th St., 215-732-5010

Sorry Goths, it's not about Satan. "Six Six Six" is an eclectic mix of works by low-profile community artists. In Melissa Nannen's oil painting Self-Portrait: After the Accident, a face with a black eye stares out, and you're left wondering just what kind of accident occurred. In Jed Mauger Williams' Despair, you can actually see the agony in a girl's expression; the image's black-and-white tones add to the drama. Don't miss Nazi Yams by Terry Wendelken.

Long Gone Sally
Runs through Aug. 4, Pageant: Soloveev, 607 Bainbridge St., 215-925-1535

Jessica Doyle looks 13 years old. But in a self-portrait photo doc, snapshots of her pregnant belly and pictures of her surrounded by tots suggest otherwise. She and artist Kate Stewart both grapple with themes of domesticity in their works. Doyle's photos reveal the self-consciousness of a young mother, while Stewart's paintings of interior decor are simple but surprising. Who would've guessed that giant waves crashing outside one's living room window could look so peaceful?

Diaspora
Runs through Aug. 10, Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art, 615 N. Broad St., 215-627-6747

For Tamara Kostianovsky, integrating herself into geography is a means of defining her place in the world. By using strands of her own hair and scraps of her clothing, Kostianovsky weaves elaborate maps of the globe. Born in Israel, she moved to Argentina and currently lives in New York. Her maps reveal not only a lifetime of relocating, but also represent the dispersion of Jews from their homeland throughout history. You'll never look at a map the same way again.
