Watering Hole

It's Where We Drink

On April 3, 1945, infamous bank robber Willie Sutton and 11 of his bestriped cohorts dug a 97-foot tunnel out of Eastern State Penitentiary. According to legend, they surfaced near 23rd Street and Fairmount Avenue, where they then decided to celebrate freedom with nice, cold ones at what is today known as London Grill.

This story is the inspiration behind Willie Sutton, London Grill's eponymous house ale. Co-owner Terry McNally explains, "When we bought the bar in 1991, one of our first goals was to bring in microbrews. I hooked up with Carol Stoudt [owner of Stoudt's Brewing Company], which was [still in its] infancy. We held some tasting events and decided to carry the medium-bodied amber lager. All the old-timers used to sit around and tell the story of Willie, so we held a vote and named the beer in his honor."

A few years ago, Stoudt's stopped its full-time production of Willie Sutton, which it mostly distributed under the name Oktoberfest from August to October. This caused a dilemma for London Grill.

"It was like losing a family member," says McNally. But after a bit of cajoling, and appeals to a deep-rooted friendship that transcended business, McNally and Stoudt struck an agreement that allowed London exclusive year-round carrying rights to what has become the staple of an otherwise ever-evolving beer selection.

You know, just in case ol' Willie ever comes back.
