Rather than sit home and gargle or brush his hair (30 strokes nightly) to prepare to slip behind the mic for his Y-Rock/XPN debut, Jim McGuinn is on tour with the Dutch boys in Voicst. Jim's no groupie. Not for them. McGuinn's doing merch 'n' radio promotions. But Voicst is that sort of obsession, something you'd leave home for. The trio plays mesmerizing, pummeling powerpop on 11-11 (Intrigue), with churning melodies and insistent riveting rhythms not witnessed since The Colour and the Shape. Unlike the Foos, drummer Joppe Molenaar isn't afraid of tech-ing up his snap, crackling beats with loops and samples. And Voicst singer Tjeerd Bomhof is playfully quirky and not all neck-bulging growly like Grohl. Phew. Hit Khyber early for the delightfully taut and tender Novenas, featuring the sweetly crooning Amy Morrissey and frazzling guitarist Brian McTear. With Late Night Television bassist John Sheehan, Novenas have got a fantastically frayed-edginess about them.
