Bedtime Beats: The Secret to Sleep
(Rhino)

Can you design music that induces sleep? Maybe not. One of the greatest of all composers, J.S. Bach, was asked to do so, and failed. His patron, Count Keyserlingk, was an insomniac, and asked Bach if he would write a work for his court keyboardist, Johann Goldberg, to help him sleep. The result was, you guessed it, the famous Goldberg Variations. As it turned out (or so the story goes), the count was not lulled into slumberland by the pieces, but was instead titillated by them. So the assignment was a failure, but a magnificent one. The count constantly asked for "my variations" to be played, and gave Bach what was probably the single highest payment for any of his works, a golden goblet and 100 gold coins.
