Radio Birdman

Rock/Pop

Named after a misheard lyric on the Stooges' Funhouse album and rooted in the high-energy, maximum rock 'n' roll style of guitarist/songwriter Deniz Tek's hometown of Ann Arbor, Mich., Radio Birdman were the free-for-all garage forefathers of Australian punk (challenged only by the Saints). All it took was Tek transplanting his jones for the Stooges/MC5/Alice Cooper Band to the basically untouched-by-punk Land Down Under in the mid-1970s and hooking up with vocalist Rob Younger. Never lacking in imagination, the band could toss off odes to both Raw Power-era Iggy ("Love Kills") and Hawaii Five-0 ("Aloha Steve and Danno") while concocting classics like "Descent Into the Maelstrom" and "Man With the Golden Helmet." Alas, in 1978, label troubles did Radio Birdman in a mere four years after they began. But the story wasn't over; Sub Pop's release of the Essential Radio Birdman in 2001 ignited a whole new wave of disciples; some surprise reunion gigs at festivals sealed their comeback. Now, with more than 30 years behind them, a resurrected and raucous Birdman bring the incendiary live show to our shores for the first time, showcasing the old and as well as the new tunes from their latest Zeno Beach (Yep Roc).

Sun., Sept. 10, 7:30 p.m., $20, with Easy Action, First Unitarian Church, 22nd and Chestnut sts., 866-468-7619, www.r5productions.com.
