Jim McGreevey

reading/signing

Former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey certainly paid his dues as a drama queen before he was comfortable being a well-adjusted out gay celebrity author. His 2004 public admission to being "a gay American," with his wife and state officials at his side, was certainly more theatrical than most coming-out experiences. Of course, he was also about to be blackmailed by his lover, whom he had on the state payroll. In gay years all that is ancient history. Time for a book tour. Recently, the out-and-about McGreevey's gone on to tell the story about the epiphanies (cue Oprah) that made him stop torturing himself and his journey of acceptance. His memoir, The Confession (Regan Books, $26.95), promises to include the good, the bad and the ugly, like those highway tearoom trysts (cue George Michael), homosex while his wife was having a child and the governor's official network of silence (cue the mob).

Mon., Sept. 25, 2 p.m., free, Penn Bookstore, 3601 Walnut St., 215-898-7595, www.upenn.bkstore.com.
