With a 15-track debut that comes in at under 34 minutes, Nashville's Be Your Own Pet doesn't stick with any song for too long. That's OK, because you'll know within five seconds where you stand with them. If you love the exuberance of "Thresher's Flail," you're in for the wildest ride of the year. If it just wears you out, you may as well turn it off and turn in for the night. Singer Jemina Pearl spits out her manifesto on "Bunk Trunk Skunk," the second track of Be Your Own Pet (Ecstatic Peace!/Universal): "I am an independent motherfucker/ And I'm here to take your money/ I'm wicked rad and I'm here/ To steal away your virginity." Elsewhere, she waxes lyrical about riding bikes, robbing banks and burning shit down. But BYOP is more than just Pearl's adorably anarchist boasting; they're also about bashing drums and thrashing, slashing guitars. Savor the teen spirit now, before adulthood breaks it. They just lost a guitarist to college.
