Pennsylvania Ballet

Just back from performing at City Center in New York City, Pennsylvania Ballet opens its local season with an audience-friendly all Jerome Robbins program. Equally comfortable in ballet or Broadway, Robbins knew how to bend a ballet pirouette to get a laugh. Fancy Free, about three sailors on leave in New York City, premiered way back in 1944. The next year Robbins collaborated with composer Leonard Bernstein to turn their small dance gem into the Broadway hit On the Town. Robbin's The Concert is a rarity in ballet — it's actually funny. Set at a Chopin piano concert, Robbins had fun showing an audience at its worst, gum-chewing, ultra-serious or asleep. Then, changing the mood altogether, PAB presents a company premiere of In the Night — more Chopin, more piano, but seriously beautiful.

Romance and Revelry: Tribute to Jerome Robbins, Wed.-Sun., Oct. 11-15, $10-$122; Audience Favorites, Fri., Oct. 13, 7:30 p.m., $17-$84, Academy of Music, Broad and Locust sts., 215-893-1999, www.paballet.org.
