Puzzles Like You

Published: Oct 18, 2006

rock/pop

It's been a long road from the snowy wash of Slowdive to the sun-drenched pop of Mojave 3's fifth long-player, Puzzles Like You (4AD/ADA). The band's unfailingly pretty releases have wound their way through coastal country and East Village folk before ending up at Puzzles' house in the hills. Layered harmonies and lap steel mingle while birds drift lazily overhead, looking down on the city but keeping an eye on the trees. Sadly, this may be the last we hear of the gauzy blend of Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell's voices. Last year, Goswell was struck with an inner ear infection that cost her a good chunk of her hearing and left her with tinnitus, vertigo and balance problems, making singing, let alone touring, unlikely in the near future. But Halstead is more than capable of holding his own, as recent solo shows have demonstrated. Opening are local kindred spirits Honeychurch, currently at work on their third album.

Sun., Oct. 22, 8 p.m., $15, with Tim O'Reagan and Honeychurch, North Star Bar, 27th and Poplar sts., 215-787-0488, www.northstarbar.com.
