What's Eating the Gilbert?

Gilbert Building Celebration

Published: Oct 18, 2006

Just ask Chinatown: The Convention Center must be fed. Next on the menu is the Gilbert Building, home to Asian Arts Initiative, the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Highwire Gallery, the Institute for Arts in Education, Vox Populi and dozens of individual artists. They don't plan on leaving quietly. The racket begins on Friday at the Gilbert Building and continues on Sunday at Vox Populi's "Victory for Vox" fundraiser.

Friday's building-wide celebration starts at 5 p.m. with open artists' studios and galleries in conjunction with Center City District's Gallery Night, a cabaret performance by Asians Misbehavin' and a group exhibit featuring work by artists with studios in the building. This will be followed by a presentation about the Gilbert and a discussion of ideas for the future of its tenants.

On Sunday Vox Populi and Victory Brewing Company will add to the fanfare by hosting a fundraiser that will help pay for the gallery's relocation. Catch performances by Plastic Little, The Yah Mos Def, Goldenbrown, Paper Napkin, Hi Soft and DJ Nag Champa. It'll be a ballyhoo worthy of your eyes, ears and pocketbooks.

Gilbert Building Celebration, Fri., Oct. 20, 5-10 p.m., free-$10; Victory for Vox, Sun., Oct. 22, 5-11 p.m., Gilbert Building, 1315 Cherry St., $10, 215-568-5513, www.voxpopuligallery.org.
