reading/fundraiser
The idea behind the Center for Literacy's upcoming fundraiser is "to intersect worlds," according to director Tom Teti. With help from Barrymore Award-winners Jennifer Childs, Pearce Bunting and Cathy Simpson, the Center will bring both acting and literature back to the simple beauty of the spoken word. Each performer has been matched with a well-known author's short story, to be dramatically, but straightforwardly, read from a spotlighted podium. In "Everything That Rises Must Converge," which will be read by Childs, Flannery O'Connor reveals the depth of misunderstanding between a mother and son as things come to a head on a bus trip. T.C. Boyle's "The Descent of Man," read by Bunting, turns the Darwinian concept into an emo boy's lament. Zora Neale Hurston exposes both weakness and strength in a rural Southern town in "Spunk," read by Simpson. To underscore the purpose of the evening's performances, Teti himself will read an essay titled "What the Center for Literacy Class Has Meant to Me," which expresses one student's thanks to a center dedicated to spreading the word.
