Philadelphia baroque orchestra Tempesta di Mare has often invited guests of international stature, like sopranos Christine Goerke and Julianne Baird. This week's concerts feature a soprano with a twist he's a man. Michael Maniaci is not a countertenor (or a surgical wonder!). His voice just happens to be naturally high, and he's trained it superbly to do justice to the wonderful heroic music Handel wrote for the famous castrati who dominated 18th-century musical life. Young Maniaci recently made Opera News magazine's "Who's Hot?" list. Along with Serse's "Ombra mai fù" the "Louie Louie" of the Handelian repertory his offerings include genuine novelties from Imeneo and Agrippina. Catch a rising (and unique) star's Philadelphia debut. The orchestra also plays rarities by Veracini and William Babell.
