Art For Justice: Reflections in Time, The Pillowman, Drawing From the Well

Published: Nov 1, 2006

Art For Justice: Reflections in Time
Runs through Nov. 3, Journey Home Gallery, 948 N. Eighth St., 215-636-9101

It wasn't the violent threats of Crazy Chris on MTV's Scared Straight! 20 Years Later that turned me off the path to prison—it was the anti-violence efforts of one Danny Glover, whom I vowed to never disappoint by tumbling into a life of crime. Consider "Reflections in Time," a collection of art created by inmates at the Graterford Maximum Security Prison, a cautionary tale for at-risk youth, a catalyst for conversation and the paint-and-canvas personification of D. Glov.

The Pillowman
Runs through Nov. 5, Wilma Theater, 265 S. Broad St., 215-893-9456

The Pillowman

Still jonesin' for that rush of Halloween cheer that only severed fingers and razor-blade apples can bring? The Pillowman has your kick. Good cop/bad cop detectives interrogate a writer about a series of child murders that eerily resemble his unpublished manuscripts. Reality and memory meld when the writer learns that they're holding his mentally impaired brother in the adjacent room.

Drawing From the Well
Runs through Nov. 5, AIRSPACE, 4013 Chestnut St., 215-694-8719

AIRSPACE's 40th Street Artist-in-Residence Program grants free studio space to artists in return for the talent they share with the West Philly community. Currently, the gallery is showcasing work by Linda Goss, the Official Storyteller of Philadelphia (an honorary title granted by Mayor Wilson Goode back in 1984), and textile artist Gretchen Shannon, along with their multimedia projects with seniors from the Cliveden Convalescent Center. On the closing day, resident poet Gweny Love, host and producer of the Gweny Love Underground Poetry Cafe TV Show, will perform.
