What We Heart

Asian Purse-asion

Published: Nov 1, 2006

If you want to rock a kimono in a new way, Shamar Custom Design has it in the bag. Its one-of-a-kind purses are constructed from vintage kimonos and obis by local designer Sharon Sloane, who finds source material everywhere from flea markets to eBay. The refurbished accessories blend modern shape and style with the texture and spice of Asia.

"So often, people look at handbags as a status symbol, with high-end designers like Gucci and Fendi," says Sloane. "But all those handbags look alike."

Sloane, who has made the penny catchers for about a year, frames each creation according to its fabric. You can see it in the cut and in added elements like broaches, beading and chains. Bags can be purchased as is, or made to order.
