Paper or Plastic?: The Arts and Crafts of Whole Foods Employees
Runs through Nov. 11, Mew Gallery, 906 Christian St., 215-625-2424, www.mewgallery.org

The Mew Gallery's impressive debut features a group showing of various media, including pen and ink, painting and root vegetable. In one piece by Diane Huebner, talking potatoes repeat "Are you hungry?" in seven languages. The prints of James Olstein, co-owner of Tame Clothing, show a soft, apocalyptic theme. But what's with all the owls? "It seems like owls are kind of popular, y'know?" says Olstein. "I've always been interested in drawing birds, especially ones with lots of feathers."

The House of Yes
Runs through Nov. 11, $10-$15, Second Stage at the Adrienne, 2030 Sansom St., 215-563-4330

The House of Yes

Incest and assassination re-enactments are exactly what the impending holiday season calls for. When Marty brings his unsophisticated and sweet fiancee (who fittingly works in a doughnut shop) home to meet the family on Thanksgiving, mom doesn't approve, twin sister Jackie-O reminisces about their unusual childhood, and little brother Anthony tries to take the doughnut queen as his own. Dad has been gone for 20 years, having mysteriously disappeared on the day of the Kennedy assassination. (See review on p. 34)

Painted Lore
Runs through Nov. 11, James Oliver Gallery, 723 Chestnut St., 267-918-7432

Did you meet the new kid on the block last week at First Friday? Probably not, since the James Oliver Gallery is just west of Old City. Stephen Starr has added some of Oliver's paintings to his private collection, and works from his current collection were used in the making of Invincible. The abstract "Painted Lore" is nothing to be scared of. Simple and palatable, it makes for good conversation along with some wine and cheese in Oliver's sleek new studio space.
