Benefit for a Friend

When Myra Bazell decided to raise funds for her sister Heidi, who is fighting cancer and needs financial assistance to help pay bills, she asked a few artist friends to participate in a benefit performance. They said yes, of course, but Bazell didn't count on so many others wanting to pitch in as well. "People heard about it though the grapevine and they contacted me saying they wanted to help," she marvels. "People really feel good about using their art to take action." The Benefit for a Friend program features a silent auction and a bunch of dance acts including Silvana Cardell, Marianela Boán, Karin Bookbinder, Ash Contemporary Dance, members of the Reactionaries and Tap Team II, as well as musicians and theater folks. Just as important as the performance are all the messages of good will that Bazell received and is passing on to Heidi. "There's this thing about universal prayer, and that's coming clear here, because I'm getting a lot of e-mails with people sending prayers or personal stories, so my sister is getting that energy, too."

Sat., Nov. 18, 8 p.m., $25, Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St. For tickets or donations, contact 215-425-6825 or myradance@aol.com.
