Plain Parade's Last Weekend

Published: Nov 15, 2006

This is the town where, if you want to, you can get to know your bookers like you know your bartenders. It's not 'cause they're glory hounds — not all of them — they're just always there for you, the friendly, reliable faces you know you'll see when you go to shows. So it's sad news that Sara Sherr and Maria Tessa Sciarrino have announced last call on Plain Parade. For four years, they were this city's feistiest, most reliable curators of rock of the independent variety (and the most thoughtful to boot). This weekend is the ferocious finale: On Friday they give us the ballsy, bassy Clockcleaner, garage smart-asses Ken (aka KeN, maybe Philly's oldest continuously rocking band) and the Notekillers (maybe our oldest noncontinuous band, not counting Charlie Gracie or the orchestra). Then the last goodbye is a coming-out party of sorts for brash rock daredevils Dragon City (pictured), who finally unleash their debut full-length, after what they admit was a "Chinese Democracy-like" delay. The Plain Parade ladies have been telling us Dragon City are the bee's knees since 2002. They were right.

Fri., Nov. 17, 10 p.m., $7, Clockcleaner, Notekillers and Ken, Tritone, 1508 South St.; Sat., Nov. 18, 10 p.m., $7, Dragon City, Artanker Convoy and Black Taj, M Room, 15 W. Girard Ave., www.plainparade.org.
