Parts & Labor

Published: Nov 21, 2006

rock/pop

Throbbing Gristle did it. Wolf Eyes did it. Blixa Bargeld did it with everything he touched. Parts & Labor do it. Manipulate the restlessly ugliest sounds the way a chiropractor wrenches sinew and tissue. Their second CD, 2006's Stay Afraid on the Jagjaguwar label, works noise like a rib and connects all the most disconnected elements of buzz, belch, rip and squeal (not to mention an unlikely Casio tinkle) into one unloving whole. Keyboardist BJ Warshaw and singer Dan Friel offer what little emotion there is through the brooding brutishness. But make no mistake. From their cruel, crushing guitars to their Herzogian jungle of damp dumb electronics, there is beauty in their abrasion — even if you have to stay afraid to sense it.

Tue., Nov. 28, 9 p.m., $8, with Saxon Shore, Johnny Brenda's, 1201 Frankford Ave., 866-468-7619, www.johnnybrendas.com.
