It's been noted a few times in these pages how Dustin Hurt's Bowerbird concert series has provided a dizzying amount of exposure for experimental music in Philly, both local and imported. But now Hurt has topped himself, not only making the music accessible, but making it appear downright respectable. In partnership with the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks, Bowerbird will present a periodic series of shows in area historic sites. Less than a year ago, Hurt was squeezing acts in between aisles and around magazine racks in the tightly cramped quarters of West Philly's Marvelous record store; now he has access to the ballroom of Old City's Powel House. Friday's kickoff hosts Geodesic Gnome, a "super-group of Baltimore weirdos," and two duos, each featuring a local and a recent transplant: electronic minimalist Jess Kudler with former Californian Chandan Narayan on autoharp, and improvising bass workhorse Evan Lipson with ex-Boston violinist Katt Hernandez.

Fri., Dec. 1, 8 p.m., $5, Powel House, 244 S. Third St., www.bowerbird.org.
