The idea of freedom in jazz assumes many forms, and taking their guerrilla-style name to heart, Philly's Sonic Liberation Front attacks the concept from a number of vantage points. Essentially a fusion of horn line and percussion ensemble, the SLF often counters the looseness of a drum circle with the rigor of tightly composed melody lines — then lets the horns fly free while the percussionists chant over a tight, interlocking rhythm. Then there's the collision of old world and new, as traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms contend with electronic loops and cut-up bursts. Unlike many experiments of this sort, the two halves actually communicate with each other, sounding at times like a third-stream big band loosening up at a jam session. Bandleader/percussionist Kevin Diehl has almost completely revamped the group since 2004's Ashé A Go-Go, incorporating half of Shot x Shot and sometime Arkestra member Julian Pressley into the lineup for the newly-released Change Over Time (High Two), which they're celebrating at this show.
