The subtitle of the Chamber Music Society's "Music of Our Time" concert could be "The Philadelphia Story." The musicians are a typical ad hoc bunch of awesome homies, including a clutch of Philadelphia Orchestra players slumming it with the new stuff, and also the Mannes Trio. Two of the works are by local composers who are probably better known for their day jobs, at least around these parts. Philip Maneval has some pull at PCMS; he runs the joint. But this executive director is really a very imaginative and compelling composer, as local new music enthusiasts know well. His Horn Trio receives its local premiere. Robert Capanna also finds time to write fascinating and colorful works when he is not running the Settlement Music School system, the largest of its kind in the country. The world premiere of his Magic Numbers V: Hymns and Dances, is on tap. Then there is Stefan Wolpe, who once taught at Settlement. Hirona Oka will present his Sonata for Solo Violin. The program concludes with music not written in Philadelphia, but revered by many musicians here, the superb Piano Trio No. 1 by the august American master Leon Kirchner.
