Her former life as an anesthesiologist took Andrea Baldeck on medical trips to distant locales such as Haiti and Grenada, a camera kept handy at her side. By 1996, the Blue Bell resident had amassed a large enough body of ethnographic portraiture and environmental detail shots that she was able to retire from the health field and concentrate on her fine-art photography. "The Heart of the Matter," closing next weekend after two months on display at Moore College of Art & Design, is the first solo exhibition of her work, and touches on many facets of her style. The work shot in Haiti is a de facto kind of stunning; like the National Geographic photo essays it recalls, "The Heart of the Matter" is impressive for its subject matter rather than its treatment. More alluring are images taken during personal travels to Southeast Asia where shadow, silhouette and clouds mix with her usual faces and places and Venice, which is depicted compellingly in high contrast and robust grain.
Baldeck gives a gallery talk titled "Visual Journey" Thu., March 15, 5:30 p.m. exhibit runs through March 18, Moore College of Art & Design, 20th St. and Ben Franklin Parkway, 215-568-4515, www.moore.edu.
