Despite its provocative pairing of glitz and guns, Bambi Gallery isn't stooping to tiresome politics. Two artists are just having fun with cultural excess. Valeta Vancza's cast-iron stars and jewels, some of which glow in the dark, protrude imposingly from the wall. The massive hunks of metal make Ron Ribant's intricate wood-carved firearms (pictured) look almost delicate. Almost.
Only when you stand right above Amy S. Kauffman's elaborate braided carpet do you realize it's made of Tootsie Roll wrappers. And that her folk-art floor design, which spreads outward in concentric circles of color, is actually thousands of Starburst wrappers. Kauffman positions her materials to create the look of complex tapestries. You even get to watch her do it the exhibit features a video in which she narrates the painstaking installation process.
Haven't we always found behind-the-scenes scandals far more intriguing than whatever's happening onstage? In Noises Off, a play within a play, all curtains go up to reveal the catty quarrels and various indecencies unfolding backstage. The performance quickly goes pear-shaped, becoming all the more entertaining for us.
