Multimedia arts presentations are all the rage, but good intentions do not always translate into quality results. The big problem is getting all of the individual components to measure up. If there are musical, theatrical and visual elements, it takes only one stinker to sink the whole thing. Think of opera: There might be good singers involved, but bad acting will ruin the evening. So it's exciting to see the growing collaboration between Network for New Music and Group Motion Dance Theater, two organizations that share a commitment to freshness, imagination and very high performance standards. This week, they join forces for music by Philadelphia composers George Crumb and David Ludwig, with choreography by Group Motion's Manfred Fischbeck and Silvana Cardell. The Crumb work is Quest, a chamber piece centered around a guitar solo that shows off an almost impressionistic side of the celebrated composer, whose music can otherwise be explosive, even violent. Ludwig's contribution will be a world premiere, Lamentations, with the words of the prophet Jeremiah reconsidered with the darker corners of the contemporary scene in mind. Video artist Peter Price will also contribute to the event.
Thu.-Fri., March 15-16, 8 p.m., $15-$20, Arts Bank, 601 S. Broad St., 215-848-7647, www.networkfornewmusic.org.
