Lenny Seidman, the Painted Bride Art Center's music curator, has been warning anyone who will listen that his venue is headed for structural demise. There are no buckling walls, cracks or other signs of imminent collapse, mind you, it's just that Seidman believes his next act, Papo Vasquez and his Mighty Pirate Orquestra, is so powerful it will "blow this place apart." The group is part of the Bride's XL Series, which is devoted to large ensembles. Vasquez's outfit, which includes five saxophones (a few of whom double on flute), five trombones, four trumpets and three percussionists plus piano, bass and drums, surely fits the bill. Led by trombonist Vasquez, the group rumbles, swings and wails, powering its way through a spicy mix of Latin, Afro-Caribbean and progressive jazz sounds. They're big on high-energy and deep grooves. Wear a helmet.
Sat., March 17, 7 and 9 p.m., $30, Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St., 215-925-9914, www.paintedbride.org.
