Big Fun for Little Ones

Published: Mar 20, 2007

Stretto Youth Chamber Orchestra

Sat., March 24, 2 p.m., $15, German Society of Pennsylvania, 611 Spring Garden St., 215-627-2332

Hide the iPods — we're going old-school. Like, Johann Sebastian Bach old-school. Kids can celebrate the Baroque composer's 302nd birthday with an all-German musical performance by Princeton's Stretto Youth Chamber Orchestra. Fantastisch! Ages 3 and up.

Make Me Dance!

Thu.-Sat., March 22-24, 7 p.m., $7, The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St., 215-573-3234

Hey, dad — been lookin' for an excuse to see scantily clad girls gyrate to loud music? Take the kids to see members of the UPenn's bellydance troupe Ya'lla shaking their hips to live Middle Eastern drumming. Stare all you want, pops, but keep the singles in your wallet. Ages 10 and up.

In Search of Giant Squid

Runs through April 29, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., $4-$6, Delaware Museum of Natural History, 4840 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, Del., 302-658-9111

Thank goodness you're not a small whale. If you were, you'd be a tasty noontime snack for a giant squid. With eyes the size of volleyballs and eight death-reaping arms (plus two bonus tentacles!), these highly elusive sea creatures can grow up to 60 feet long and weigh a ton (pictured, sort of). This exhibit features real squid beaks and suckers and a video of the creature chillin' in its natural habitat. Ages 4 and up.

Family Evening Nature Hike

Sun., March 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m., $8-$12, Tyler Arboretum, 515 Painter Road, Media, 610-566-9134

Deborah Hemphill will direct families through the arboretum while discussing the seasonality of plants and animals. (Tell young Dr. Jones he's hunting for treasure.) Don't forget to preregister and bring a flashlight; Indy may hate snakes, but he never gets lost in the dark. Ages 8 and up.

National History Day Philadelphia

Wed., March 28, 9:30 a.m., $7-$9, National Constitution Center, 525 Arch St., 215-409-6700

National History Day is an academic competition where students compete in hopes of reaching the finals in D.C. With "Triumph and Tragedy in History" as this year's theme, they'll dazzle your tykes with a dance interpretation of the influenza epidemic or a speech highlighting the upside of the Crusades. To those who say history's no fun: The influenza dance troupe begs to differ. Ages 11 and up.
