In tribute to the beloved American diva Anna Moffo (1931-2006), a Curtis graduate from Wayne whose beautiful voice made its mark on international stages and screens in the '50s and '60s, Curtis Opera Theatre presents two concert performances of one of her happiest recorded vehicles, Puccini's bittersweet 1917 operetta La Rondine (The Swallow). Not heard often enough, La Rondine tells of the doomed romantic dalliance between the Parisian courtesan Magda and the naive Ruggero, who knows nothing of her past and hopes to marry her. There's both humor and heartbreak along the way, plus two of Puccini's greatest numbers ever: the heroine's unforgettable main aria ("Il bel sogno di Doretta") and the utterly irresistible Act 2 ensemble, when love erupts in a crowded cafe. The leading role is shared by sopranos Karen Jesse (March 30) and Amanda Majeski (April 1). Dominic Armstrong plays her suitor, Ruggero, on both nights. Expect high-level music-making all around: David Hayes conducts the reliably excellent Curtis Chamber Orchestra, with the estimable Mendelssohn Club taking the choral parts.
Fri., March 30, 8 p.m., and Sun., April 1, 2:30 p.m., $30, Curtis Opera Theatre at Prince Music Theater, 1412 Chestnut St., 215-893-7902, www.curtis.edu.
