For those who think Dick and Liz and Franco Zeffirelli take the cake when it comes to lively interpretation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, allow Lantern Theater to take another joust at the prize with its all-male-cast version of this classic battle of the sexes. It doesn't get more mano-a-mano than this.
March 30-April 29, $15-$30, Lantern Theater, St. Stephen's Theater, 10th and Ludlow streets, 215-829-9002, www.lanterntheater.org.

Quondam press releases from Kelly Writers House said you had to sign up early to take part in this Saturday's spelling bee. They've since reneged on that, and acquiesced to allowing entrants to sit for a spell that evening. Since you're heading there anyway, why not convey superfluous children's books for their book drive? And while you're waiting to be felled by some sesquipedalian, inkhorn word, you might as well gormandize some hard-to-spell foods (peradventure cantaloupe, mini-reubens and/or pomegranates) and enjoy a live musical performance by Red Heart the Ticker.
Sat., March 31, 7 p.m., free, Kelly Writers House, 3805 Locust Walk, 215-573-WRIT, www.writing.upenn.edu/wh.
