For their last visit here in Philadelphia, Sydney Dance Company was forced to perform without their large sculptural set piece: It had been detained at the docks by the Department of Homeland Security. Clearly, this crew is made up of real troupers. They've got magnificent endurance, too, preferring a format of one long, thematic full-evening work, sans intermission. This go-round they present Grand, an expansive piano ballet that at times reflects the inner workings of the instrument, physically acting out the operations of the hammers and strings, as well as the structure of the musical chords. It's clever, and superbly represented this company has phenomenal chops. There's no mistaking Sydney's precise technical ballet training. The music encompasses celebrated composers of many genres, including Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy, Fats Waller and George Gershwin. Let's just hope the grand piano, played live onstage, poses no threat to U.S. security.
