Opera, of course, is the broadest of dramatic forms, offering epic tales related in grandiose fashion. So a dance performance inspired by opera would seem to hint at telegraphed gestures and extravagant leaps. But for Philly dancer/choreographer Melisa Putz, drama can come from the smallest of movements, the tilt of her head or the rolling of a shoulder. So for the first evening-length work for her PIMA Group performance ensemble, she explores her inspiration not through opera glasses but under a microscope. Putz, joined by two other dancers, four musicians, a video artist and a chorus of six, has stripped away the narrative, breaking down the form into its constituent parts, creating an "emotional landscape of breath, sound and movement." With many of those involved being closely associated with the local experimental music scene, and with such an avowed concentration on breath and sound, the evening promises to find the drama in the moments between the arias.
