Culinary Mysteries Solved

Published: Apr 3, 2007

Q: I'm obsessed with the juice at Papaya King in New York. Is there a place where I can get a fresh-squeezed glass in Philly?

A: This is trickier than it sounds — some restaurants that claim to have "fresh-squeezed" juice actually rely on concentrate; others just slap it on their menu for dramatic effect. That said, a handful of local restaurants pride themselves on their all-killer, no-filler juice. For $4.50 a glass, White Dog Café (3420 Sansom St.; 215-386-9224) serves pulpy, farm-fresh OJ sourced straight from Lancaster County greenhouses. If you like your vitamin C with alcohol, try Bar Ferdinand's (1030 N. Second St.; 215-923-1313) Sol de Cadiz (orange plus your choice of liquor) or La Paz (Cava and ruby red grapefruit juice, served in a sugar-rimmed glass). Also on the brunch tip: Sazon (941 Spring Garden St., 215-763-2500) offers a roster of exotics: guava, passion fruit, tamarind, lemon and sour sop.

Whole Foods' Jamba Juice (929 South St.;215-733-9788) is squeezed and blended on the spot, and includes vitamin-packed smoothies made with carrot, orange, mango, pineapple and strawberry. Likewise, Essene Cafe (719 S. Fourth St.; 215-928-3722) sells a fantastic celery and apple blend, a great afternoon recharge.
