visual art/lecture
Yikes stripes! The third annual Design Philadelphia overlaps with the Film Fest, a tragedy of timing for those of us who plan to attend every screening for the latter, and every lecture for the former (and in addition, going to talks at the Free Library, City Council meetings and also the grocery store). But anyway, culture vultures and good citizens, Design Philadelphia is like a big design party, with over 50 talks, exhibitions, open studies, panels, workshops and parties that highlight all facets of design, from urban planning to textiles. Participants include everyone who's anyone, from Tyler students to art galleries to architecture firms. A symposium on Philadelphia's first and most lasting design legacy, the now iconic grid, kicks off the educational fun. Other good bets include The Fabric Workshop's "Seeing Red" exhibition (1315 Cherry St., fifth and sixth floors), design team In Rare Form's installation "Reinvention: Circles, Squares and the City Grid" (Liao Collection, 310 N. 11 St.), and a sustainable design forum (Philadelphia Art Alliance, 251 S. 18th St.).
April 12-22, Symposium and Opening Reception 4-6 p.m., Marketplace Design Center, 2400 Market St., lower level, 215-951-2863,
