Big Fun for Little Ones

Published: Apr 10, 2007

Finding King Tut
Tue., April 17, 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., $8, Christ's Lutheran Church, 700 Pennsylvania Ave., Oreland, Pa., 215-886-9341

Philly's gone wild for Egypt, but if your tot's not into artifacts and museum tours, grab popcorn and head to Oreland instead. This Family Stages performance tells the story of how, in 1922, archaeologist Howard Carter excavated the 3,000-year-old tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun, buried in the desolate Valley of the Kings. Ages 5 and up.

Tours for Tots
Sun., April 15, 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., free with admission, Philadelphia Museum of Art, 26th Street and the Parkway, 215-684-7590

If your kids use the living room wall as a blank canvas, send the little doodlers on an art adventure. With Ellsworth Kelly as their muse, preschoolers will explore color in art, go on a "color hunt," and create a piece of art using bright scarves and felt shapes. Ages 3 to 5.

Sheep Shearing Day
Sat., April 14, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m., free, Peter Wentz Farmstead, Shearer Road, Worcester, Pa., 610-584-5104

George Washington made this Pennsylvania German farm his headquarters while defending Philly in 1777; it's since been fully restored to its colonial-era self. Watch as skilled craftsmen shear sheep and make wool products on the spot. Ages 6 and up.

Fun with Origami
Sat., April 14, 11 a.m.-noon, free with admission, Morris Arboretum, 100 Northwestern Ave., 215-247-5777

Part of the Suburu Cherry Blossom Festival, this workshop shows kids how to fold bits of paper into different shapes and animals. After making take-home cranes, catch the dancing and drumming of the Swarthmore University Taiko Drummers at 1 p.m. Ages 5 and up.

Family Sail
Sat.-Sun., April 14-15, 1:30-4 p.m., $12-$25, Independence Seaport Museum, 211 S. Columbus Blvd., 856-785-2060

The oyster industry crashed with the parasite MSX in 1957, but schooner AJ Meerwald still sails the Delaware. Once on board, kids will hear all about the history of the tall ship and its restoration process. During the two-and-a-half-hour ride, mariners can help raise the 3,500-square-foot canvas sail. Ages 3 and up.
