Applehead Factory's Teddy Scares brand, homicidal stuffed bears with demented accessories (axes, tattered clothes, discarded love letters, etc.), has been expanded into YouTube animated shorts and now a graphic novel featuring the work of several Philadelphia cartoonists. The comic book adds another chapter to the violent mythos of the teddy bear (the first teddy bear was purportedly birthed after one of President Theodore Roosevelt's hunting trips), and fleshes out the brief biographies of the lovable grotesques seeking to exact vengeance on neglectful owners.
Teddy Scares creator Joe DiDomenico was pursued by several publishers interested in turning his plush franchise into a comic book, but it wasn't until a fortuitous meeting with Ape Entertainment at the Philadelphia Wizard World convention that he found someone who "really understood what I wanted."
The first issue of the full-color, quarterly comic, written by Jim Hankins with an introduction by Twisted Sister's Dee Snider, will be unveiled at a Friday the 13th party at Conspiracy Showroom. Food and drinks are free, bears can be bought, and artists will be on hand to discuss the project.
