Dominick Argento's one-act opera Postcard From Morocco contains a heady mix of influences. The basic plot involves a group of strangers waiting for a train, wondering about the contents of one another's suitcases. This nods to surrealism, certainly, but also suggests Freudian overtones. The timing — 1914 and the brink of WWI — is significant, marking one of the great turning points in history. Argento, who was trained in the 12-tone method, masterfully uses music to enhance his themes, with nostalgia-soaked melodies and even quotes from Wagner operas to suggest the end of an era. The work is seldom performed, despite critical raves, and so hats off to Curtis for having the pluck to give it a go.

Thu.-Sat., April 19-21, 8 p.m.; Sun., April 22, 2:30 p.m., $30, Curtis Opera Theatre at Prince Music Theater, 1412 Chestnut St., 215-893-7902, www.curtis.edu.
