Running Numbers

A scholarly look at the digits that matter.

Running Numbers prepares you for all things election.

9 Number of candidates up for three different positions in the April 19 election for The Catalysis Club of Philadelphia, a nonprofit "founded in 1949 to promote the advancement of knowledge of the science of catalysis." This is just as important as that other race, people. Let's hope their new officers can make good on that mission statement, because I don't even know how to pronounce "catalysis."

21 Number of at-large candidates currently in the running for City Council. Get to know them at an forum organized by a number of neighborhood organizations April 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hancock St. John's Church, 1217 North Hancock St. Questions to pose: Do you support separation of church and state? Who's the at-largest and in-chargest? What is catalysis?

31 Number of members proposed for the Zoning Code Commission, which could be created if voters approve a May 15 ballot question asking whether the Philadelphia Home Rule Charter should be amended to create an independent commission that would review the current zoning code and recommend changes to make it "consistent and easy to understand, and to enhance and improve Philadelphia's city planning process while encouraging development and protecting the character of Philadelphia's neighborhoods." Visit www.zoningmatters.org for more info. 'Cause so far, it sounds pretty sketchy.

46 Number of items up for bid in the Clean Air Council's 5K Run for Clean Air Auction, the proceeds of which support "programs that cut toxic mercury emissions, slow global warming, and reduce the air pollution that triggers asthma and other respiratory problems." Auction ends April 22. City Hall is not among the auction items. At least not in this case.

2,650 Number of miles covered by the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, the subject of "Resouled on the Pacific Crest Trail," a documentary that will be presented as part of the Green on Screen program April 20 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, 8480 Hagy's Mill Road. A backpacking clinic by Eastern Mountain Sports will precede the film at 6 p.m. Potential losing candidates are encouraged to attend to prepare for their exile in the wilderness. Hear that, Taubenberger?

Can I get your digits? I want to hear about the numerals you need to see. Let a number runner know at runningnumbers@gmail.com.
