Your corner bar might have a special on Yuengling, but at Billies Boomer Lounge, the specialty is community community service, that is. Once a month, the bar holds a potluck dinner for homeless folks and anybody else who wants a good meal.
"All of the staff members bring something," says "starmaid" Lisa Poteat, "and the regulars, too." Hearty fare like chicken, roast turkey, stuffing, beef, potatoes and various salads gets laid out on a big table in the back of the bar. The next planned event, a barbecue in early May, will celebrate the return of spring (assuming it ever comes). In addition to feasts, Billies regularly hosts fundraisers for community groups.
It's worth noting, of course, that Billies concern for community extends to its clientele, too. One regular fondly remembers how Poteat once refused service to a drinker she knew was driving home. Instead, she gave him something more worthwhile. Says Poteat, "I made sure he had some food before he left."
