Some say folks who drink alone are alcoholics. To avoid such dastardly pigeonholing, hang out at the crowded guild night at South Philly's Burg's Lounge every fourth Tuesday.

Bar guilds are loose organizations of local taverns that band together to support one another. For a decade, Burg's has belonged to the Guys and Dolls Guild (known as the Seven Guys and a Doll Guild before several of its establishments shuttered their windows). The group's roots mirror the networking nature of the event. "I might have been down at [Fairmount's] Prince's and I liked it," recalls Burg's owner Ralph Burger. "So I would go down there and give them a play, and it grew from there." The organization hosts a get-together at one of the four surviving bars every Tuesday night. Next week, Germantown's B+E Lounge hosts, followed by North Philly's Double Down, and then the aforementioned Prince's.

"For things like this, you pick your slowest night," says Burger. When the bar owners load into the host owner's joint, they bring lots of friends and buy drinks for anyone who looks thirsty. And, since all the visiting bars pledge to have a tab of at least $125, even lonesome barflies can get their sips.
